Romito, the picturesque village of Pontedera: history, church, and relaxation in Tuscany.

The history

The hamlet of Romito has its origins in the 19th century, as evidenced by the toponym "I Giorgi" which indicated some farmhouses inhabited by the Giorgi family, who immigrated to the area from Garfagnana at the beginning of the century. In those years, the area also included a shooting range, so the locality was commonly called "Tiro a Volo" and became famous for this sport, which ended only in the late 1960s. Starting from 1958, the hamlet experienced a great process of urbanization and a building development such that already in the census of 1961, 446 inhabitants could be counted. In 1966, an autonomous parish was established, separated from Pontedera. Today, the hamlet has about 1200 inhabitants and is the second largest hamlet in the municipality after La Rotta (Pontedera).

The church of Santa Maria Madre della Chiesa

In the hamlet, an independent parish was erected on December 8, 1966, separating it from that of San Giuseppe in Pontedera, and ten days later a prefabricated church dedicated to Mary (mother of Jesus) was blessed and opened for worship. The building was originally a prefabricated shed, then demolished following the works for the construction of the Florence-Pisa-Livorno Great Communication Road. The present church has a circular sector plan and was designed by the architect Luciano Giorgi.

Conclusions

In summary, the hamlet of Romito is a charming place that offers a breathtaking setting for holidays in Tuscany. With a strategic location, a pleasant history, and a truly suggestive church, it is the ideal place for those seeking relaxation, nature, and culture. If you want to visit Romito, you are welcome, its welcoming inhabitants await you with open arms!
