Gello

Gello: A Fraction of Pontedera

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Gello, a fraction of the Italian municipality of Pontedera, in the province of Pisa, Tuscany. The name derives from the Latin "Agellus," which means "small farm."

History

The name "Gello Putido" or "Putrid" dates back to 1099 and referred to Gello di Pontedera and its hydrographic instability. In 1364, Florentine troops stayed in the area before attacking the Pisans in the battle of Cascina. Sites of the Roman Empire were abandoned in the 3rd century AD as it is presumed the area converted into a swamp. The female monastery of Santa Maria in Selva, identifiable with the locality "Badia," was attested to since 1131 and was located between Gello and Fornacette.

Economy

Gello has an important industrial center that serves the entire municipality of Pontedera and surrounding areas. The Geofor S.p.A. has a waste landfill in the area since 2007. Since 2007, the computer company, CDC, is also located here. In 2002, an artisanal body shop was founded in the industrial center, now it has become a full-fledged automobile company and has its own showroom since 2011. Gello also hosts a wind farm with four Enercon E-82 turbines that have a total power of 8 MW, managed by Pontedera Eolica (Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque - ASA Livorno).
