Origins of the name: the ancient bridge of planks and the Roman Centurion

The name of the municipality of Pontedassio refers to the presence of an ancient bridge of planks that in the past connected the center of the valley to the surrounding villages. According to a more recent version, instead, the name derives from Axius, a Roman centurion who once owned the area.

History: from the domination of the Doria family to the constitution of the Republic of Genoa

The village of Pontedassio was a possession of the Diocese of Albenga-Imperia together with the village of Oneglia, following their historical fortunes over time. In 1298 it became a domain of the Genoese Doria family, and subsequently belonged to the Duchy of Savoy. In 1801-1803, with the constitution of the Republic of Genoa, Pontedassio merged into it. It was then incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia and from 1861 into the Kingdom of Italy, until the constitution of the current municipality.
