Pontecurone: Treasures of a plain city

Origins of the name

The name "Pontecurone" comes from the Latin "pons Coronis" or "pontis Coronis", referring to the bridge over the Curone stream that runs through the city.

History

The history of Pontecurone dates back to Roman times, thanks to the flourishing of the Postumia Via near the important ford on the Curone. In 962, Otto I of Saxony donated some possessions, including the locality of Ponte Coironum, where our beautiful municipality is now located.

During World War II, the railway bridge over the Curone was repeatedly bombed by the Allies, as the Alessandria-Piacenza railway and the Milan-Genoa railway passed through the town.

Symbols

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Pontecurone was recognized by royal decree on 7 February 1938. The gonfalon is a blue drape.

Religious architecture

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, mentioned in the twelfth century, is a religious building of great historical importance, while the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Oratory of San Francesco are small churches that will leave you in awe.

Economy

The economy of the town was based on agriculture and livestock farming, such as cows, chickens, and pigs, but silkworm breeding was also widespread, feeding on the leaves of mulberries, which were plentiful in the countryside to define the fields.

In conclusion, Pontecurone awaits you with its many treasures and beautiful countryside! Do not hesitate to visit it and enjoy its beauty!
