Pontechianale

Pontechianale: a scattered municipality between nature and history

Pontechianale is a small scattered municipality with 173 inhabitants located in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont. The town is situated in the Varaita Valley, which is part of the Italian Occitan Valleys.

Territory

Pontechianale's territory is characterized by the presence of important natural resources such as the Castello dam and lake, which are used for the production of electricity. The presence of the dam made the evacuation and submersion of the Chiesa fraction necessary in 1942. However, the houses and the parish church were rebuilt in another location in the same municipality and resumed the name of the Chiesa fraction.

The town is one of the components of the "Castellata", together with Casteldelfino and Bellino. The Varaita Valley presents a mountainous environment with the presence of woods, mountains, and meadows. Pontechianale is therefore the ideal place to spend the summer, perhaps taking excursions in nature.

Monuments and places of interest

Pontechianale is a reference point for ski lovers, thanks to the presence of ski lifts for winter skiing both in the village and at higher altitude. The town hosted the Ferragosto concert edition in 2010, broadcast live nationally by Rai Tre.

Another place of interest is the Bosco dell'Alevè, the largest European Swiss pine forest. In the Chianale fraction, instead, there is the Costume and Textile Craft Museum, which houses a rich collection of traditional costumes. The same Chianale fraction has been included in the list of "Italy's most beautiful villages."
