A Brief History of the Province of Imperia
Historically, the Province of Imperia belonged to the province of Nice until 1860, when most of the province was ceded to France and the remaining part to the Kingdom of Sardinia became the province of Porto Maurizio. In 1923, after the fusion of the capital Porto Maurizio into the new city of Imperia, the province assumed its current name. In May of 1945, part of the territory of the province was occupied by French troops with the intention of annexing it, but the order of US President Harry Truman imposed the withdrawal of Charles De Gaulle's army.

The official symbol of the Province of Imperia was approved by a decree in 1927. The province is also among the institutions City Decorated for Military Valor for the War of Liberation, awarded in 1979 with the Gold Medal for Military Valor.
