Physical geography
Territory
Pomigliano d'Arco is situated on a flat and fertile territory and is located about 12 kilometers east of Naples. The city is divided into a historical zone and a newer zone, developed in the '60s and '70s due to the high attraction of the industrial hub that was being built.
Climate
The climate of Pomigliano d'Arco is very humid due to the terrain on which the city stands, which was once covered in swamps and marshes. Additionally, the area is very windy due to winds coming from the Campanian Apennines. The nearest meteorological station to the city is at Napoli Capodichino.
History
According to Cantone, a historian of Pomigliano d'Arco, the city has Roman origins when a senator was sent to solve a boundary dispute between the history of Naples and the city of Hyria. The senator decided to donate the contested territory to the Roman Republic, which became "Campo Romano." Rome disposed of colonizers, including the "Pomilii," from which the city's name probably comes. "D'Arco," on the other hand, refers to the city's position in relation to the arches of the Roman Aqueduct of Serino.
With the spread of Christianity, a church was built around Felice di Nola, surrounded by walls and ramparts, still visible at the end of the eighteenth century. Outside the walls, another church was built, that of the True Cross, entrusted to the Greek fathers of San Basilio. Around it, the Santa Croce village rose.
