Campo Jemini
Campo Jemini: An Oasis of History and Nature in Lazio
Campo Jemini is a small village situated between the Tyrrhenian coast of Torvaianica and the border of Ardea in the municipality of Pomezia, with a population of 2,000 residents. This location offers both natural and historical beauty.
Natural Beauty and Mild Climate
Campo Jemini has a temperate Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and autumns warmer than springs. Summers can be hot, but the presence of wind makes the climate more tolerable. The surrounding natural landscape is diverse, ranging from Mediterranean shrubbery to ancient olive trees and oak forests.
The Ancient City of Lavinio
A few kilometers from Campo Jemini lies Lavinio, an ancient Latin city. In 1794, the Duke of Sussex discovered several archaeological artifacts that testify to the presence of a Latin temple called "Aphrodisium." Based on this hypothesis, Antonio Nibby indicated this site as a possible place of the Venus statue.
Other ancient treasures found in the area include statues of Juno, the torso of a small Apollo, one of Cupid and a Mercury, the god of the gym.
Cavalier Mazzoleni and Sharecropping
At the beginning of the 20th century, Cavalier Mazzoleni's property in Campo Jemini was divided into plots and assigned to families from the Marche region to improve the agricultural production of the area. However, this operation proved to be less effective in Campo Jemini due to past cases of malaria present in the area.
Connections and Accessibility
Campo Jemini is reachable only via one road, Via delle Orchidee, which connects this village with nearby Castagnetta and Torvaianica Alta. This makes Campo Jemini a peaceful and quiet oasis far from the noise of the city.
In summary, Campo Jemini is a unique place that offers not only the beauty of nature but also the historical testimony of the presence of the Latin civilization. Its location away from urban chaos makes it an ideal place for those seeking peace and tranquility.
