Pombia
Welcome to Pombia
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a charming place in the province of Novara, in Piedmont: Pombia. This municipality of just over two thousand inhabitants is a place rich in history and natural beauty. But its true gem is the Pombia Safari Park, an amusement park and zoo that attracts visitors of all ages.
History
Did you know that the roots of Pombia date back to Roman times? At that time, the inhabited center was called "Flavia Plumbia". But that's not all: here you can also find the ruins of Castel Domino and the Romanesque church of San Vincenzo "in castro", sites of great historical interest.
The Counts of Pombia, the Counts of San Giorgio and the Counts Della Porta
But I want to reveal another secret to you. Around Pombia there are other splendid villages, such as San Giorgio. Here there was a fortress used by the Counts of Pombia to control the crossings on the Ticino river and collect passage fees. In 1028 the title of Count of Pombia passed to Guido I, founder of the lineage of the Counts of Biandrate; the main branch of the family founded the Abbey of Saints Nazario and Celso of San Nazzaro Sesia, which is still present today. Meanwhile, a cadet branch of the Counts of Pombia remained in the village of San Giorgio, subsequently evolving into families such as the Alberti and the Counts Della Porta. Today, the Bertinotti of San Giorgio continue to carry on the tradition of the noble family, holding the title of Counts of Pombia and Varallo.
