Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a small village in the municipality of Pomarance, located in the beautiful region of Tuscany: San Dalmazio.
Physical Geography
San Dalmazio is located in the Val di Cecina, a valley characterized by hilly landscapes and gentle slopes. The state road 439 Sarzanese Valdera runs through the village, which is located at an altitude of 298 meters above sea level.
History
San Dalmazio has an ancient and interesting history. The village dates back to the 11th century, when the castle was built, but the first mention of it dates back to around 1040. Originally, the village was dependent on the monastery of San Pietro in Palazzuolo. In 1147 a monastery of Benedictine nuns was founded, destroyed by a fire in 1438. Pope Eugenio IV granted indulgences to help rebuild the monastery, but the nuns moved to Volterra in 1511. In 1776, San Dalmazio lost its administrative autonomy and became part of Pomarance.
Monuments and Places of Interest
The village of San Dalmazio is characterized by several monuments and places of interest. The Church of San Dalmazio, attributed to Bartolomeo Ammannati, dates back to the 16th century. There are also two oratories, one of the Institute of Charity and the other of San Donnino, where a nail considered miraculous for diseases is kept. Finally, the Casa Serafini has a plaque commemorating Giuseppe Garibaldi's stay in San Dalmazio from August 28 to September 1, 1849.
