History: From the Castle to the Struggles Between Guelfs and Ghibellines

The town of Polverigi has a long and interesting history. In ancient times, the town was called ''Pulverisium'', due to the dusty and powdery soil. The Parish of San Damiano dei Avellaniti monks existed since 835. After the year one thousand, the monks moved to the current Polverigi where they founded the church of Sant'Antonino and began the construction of the "Castle". This castle, whose walls, towers and battlements have been transformed into houses, saw the non-belligerence agreement between the cities of Ancona, Osimo and Fermo in 1202.

In 1323, due to the frequent wars between Guelfs and Ghibellines, the town was stripped of its assets by an adventurer named "Lo Schiavo". Later, Polverigi preferred to come under the protection of Ancona, and the city was looted by Ludovico di Fermo during the war of the duchy of Urbino in 1517. During World War II, the Pigliapoco family hid and protected four members of the Milanese Jewish family Morpurgo from deportation. For their commitment to solidarity, on June 27, 1995, the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem conferred on the spouses Attilio and Lidia Pigliapoco the high honor of Righteous Among the Nations.

Monuments and Places of Interest: a Gothic-Romanesque Church

One of the main attractions of Polverigi is the Church of the Sacrament, also known as Santa Maria Maddalena, built in the fourteenth century. The church still preserves the Gothic-ROManesque elements with which it was built. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the interior was transformed in Baroque style, but the floor and ceiling remained original. Inside, many frescoes from different eras are on display, including a baroque-style St. Bernard and a Madonna with Child and a St. Augustine painted around the fifteenth century, both realized in styles of the Marche school. The church will soon be used to house works of art from other churches.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Polverigi is a wonderful city full of history and culture. From the fascinating remains of the Castle to the Romanesque-Gothic churches, this place is certainly worth a visit. Don't miss the opportunity to savor local products and admire the breathtaking landscape!
