Polonghera

Hi! Let me tell you about Polonghera

Polonghera is a small town in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont with just over a thousand inhabitants. Although not well-known, Polonghera is a village with a long history and a beautiful artistic and architectural heritage. Let me tell you a bit about its history and attractions.

The history of Polonghera

Polonghera was probably founded during the Early Middle Ages as a salt depot from the county of Nice. After being transported along the Po River, it was loaded onto rafts and taken to Turin. Over the centuries, the town developed under the control of various noble families until it was occupied by the Acaia in 1409 and given, with the title of count, to Ludovico Costa of Chieri who ordered the restoration of the castle.

The castle suffered extensive damages in the seventeenth century by the French troops heading towards Carmagnola. Despite this, the square tower of the original structure is still well-preserved and is one of its main attractions.

Polonghera has an ancient history and is rich in important architecture such as the Parish Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, rebuilt in 1638 and complete with a sixteenth-century baptismal font. The Confraternity of the Holy Spirit and the Confraternity of Santa Maria, both from the eighteenth century, are other places of great cultural interest for visitors.

The Castle, extensively renovated in subsequent centuries, is instead privately owned and is currently used as a country residence. The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Pilone (eighteenth century) is another important tourist attraction and is part of the cultural tourist circuit "Terre dei Savoia".
