Pioppi

Discovering Pioppi

Climbing up the hill of Pioppi, one can admire a breathtaking panorama that extends from Capo Palinuro to Punta Licosa. Inside the town, one can visit the church of San Giorgio, built at the end of the 18th century. In recent years, Pioppi has become famous for its connection with the Mediterranean Diet and the eponymous Museum, which displays documents and artifacts related to the diet itself.

The Mediterranean Diet in Pioppi

The connection between Pioppi and the Mediterranean Diet dates back about 70 years, when Ancel Keys, an American physiologist, decided to move to the town to study its inhabitants, considered incredibly long-lived. The research focused on the lifestyle and nutrition of the people of Pioppi. From these studies came the dietary model of the Mediterranean Diet, now recognized as one of the healthiest and most complete in the world.
