Economy: Many Specialized Companies

As in many areas of the Marche region, the Province of Macerata has numerous small but highly specialized companies in various sectors. In particular, the footwear industry is quite relevant. In 2006, the Bank of the Province of Macerata was also established.

Infrastructure and Transport: Old Roads and Railway Line

Before the automobile era, the Province of Macerata was crossed by ancient roads that led to Rome. The most important was the Via Lauretana, which entered the Marche region through the Colfiorito Plateau, reached Tolentino along the Chienti Valley, and headed towards the sanctuary of the Holy House and from there to the port of Ancona.

With the arrival of trains, the province saw the construction of the Rome-Ancona railway line through the Fossato di Vico-Fabriano-Vall'Esina Pass. This eliminated the province's ambitions to see a direct railway artery to the capital realized, but a line was still built that connects Albacina to Ancona passing through important cities in the province such as Macerata, Matelica, San Severino Marche, Tolentino, Corridonia, and Montecosaro. There was also a railway line connected to Camerino that went from Castelraimondo, now replaced by a bus service.

Exploring the Province of Macerata also means discovering these ancient communication arteries that have marked its history and landscape. Come and discover this precious Marche territory!
