Hello everyone! Today we’ll talk about Polla, an Italian municipality in the province of Salerno, located in the Campania region. Polla has a population of 5,109 inhabitants and is known for its geographical location, history, and places of interest.

Geographical location

Polla is located north of the Vallo di Diano, on the banks of the Tanagro River and close to the Alburni Mountains. The town is about 7 km from Pertosa and 5 km from the Grotte di Pertosa, both famous for their system of natural caves. Polla is divided into neighborhoods, the main one being San Pietro, along the State Road 19 delle Calabrie.

History

Polla was at the center of the terrible Vallo di Diano earthquake in 1561, a disastrous event that had a strong impact on the city. Subsequently, Polla was named the capital of the eponymous Administrative Subdivision of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies from 1811 to 1860 and the capital of the district (right) from 1860 to 1927 during the Kingdom of Italy.

Monuments and places of interest

Polla is rich in monuments and places of interest. Among the main religious architecture are the Church of San Nicola dei Latini, the Sanctuary of Sant'Antonio, the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, and the Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate. Civil buildings include the Palazzo Manganelli-Barrese-Ripa, Palazzo Albirosa, the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Galloppo, Palazzo Palmieri, Palazzo Parisi, and Palazzo Rubertini.

The city also boasts a military structure like the Castle, built to defend the territory from enemies. Other points of interest are the Polla Relief, the Graccano Term, and the Mausoleum of Caio Uziano Rufo. The Rimembranza Park is dedicated to war casualties.

Society

Polla's economy is mainly based on agriculture and tourism. The municipality is the main center of the area in which it is located, second only to Sala Consilina in population, and is the seat of a Hospital and a detached unit of the Italian Red Cross.

Economy

Polla is very active on the tourist front thanks to its natural beauty and places of interest, including the majestic Castle. Additionally, the city produces high-quality olives, vegetables, cereals, fruit, and dairy products.

Infrastructure and transport

The main way to access Polla is the A2 (Italy) motorway, the Polla motorway exit. Moreover, State Road 19 delle Calabrie passes through the town. State Road 426 di Polla is the other important road link that connects Polla to Salvitelle and Sassano.
