San Vito, a small village overlooking the sea
San Vito is a small village in the Polignano a Mare area, located in the province of Bari, with only 88 inhabitants. Despite its small size, San Vito is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beaches such as Porto Cavallo, Porto Contessa and the San Vito beach, located just below the Abbey of San Vito Martire. In addition, around the abbey, they cultivate the Polignano carrot, which has been recognized by Slow Food presidia.
The Abbey of San Vito Martire
Undoubtedly, the main attraction of San Vito is the Abbey of San Vito Martire, built in the 10th century. The irregular quadrangular plant is equipped with a magnificent porch on the main façade overlooking a small internal cloister. The bell tower, in particular, is a finely worked tower in the Lecce Baroque style. Today, the abbey is owned by the La Greca marquises, while the church, owned by the Fund for Cult Buildings of the Ministry of the Interior, is leased to the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta where Sunday mass is celebrated.

The feast of San Vito Martire, celebrated on June 14, 15 and 16, represents one of the most important events in the village. On this occasion, the image of the Saint is carried in a procession by sea to Polignano a Mare. During the summer, there are numerous events such as concerts and recreational activities. Finally, San Vito has been chosen as a location for numerous films such as "Professione Vacanze" and some scenes from the TV series "Le indagini di Lolita Lobosco".
