Pognano
Welcome to Pognano, a municipality in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy with a population of approximately 1554 inhabitants. Located in the middle of the Bergamo plain, the village is only 13 kilometers south of Bergamo and has been inhabited since the Iron Age by the Cenomani Gauls tribe and later by the Latins.
A Varied History
The area where Pognano is located has been the subject of important historical events, such as the establishment of feudalism and the disputes between the Guelphs and Ghibellines during the Middle Ages. In the thirteenth century, a castle was built to protect citizens from enemy attacks, but it was destroyed in 1406 by a powerful local lord. Over the centuries, the village was ruled by different lords including the Visconti of Milan and the Republic of Venice. The latter left an important mark in the area with significant interventions aimed at improving social and working conditions, including the construction of irrigation channels and the reclamation of land.
Symbols of History
The coat of arms and banner of Pognano were granted in 1976 and are symbols of the struggles between the Guelphs and Ghibellines of the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, which brought about devastation and destruction especially by the neighboring town of Lurano. The coats of arms feature two crossed daggers on a red background.
Places of Interest
The most interesting buildings in Pognano are all of a religious nature. The Church of the Visitation of Mary and Joseph is the most famous and dates back to the sixteenth century. The church was built to replace another religious building and features a precious wooden altar with inlaid work from the seventeenth century. One of the most important works inside is a painting of San Gottardo from the fourteenth century.
Demographic Evolution
In the twentieth century, Pognano saw a significant demographic increase and a change in the working life. Agriculture and livestock, the traditional activities of the village, were replaced by industries and service activities, leaving agriculture to a minority part.
