Poggiofiorito

Discovering Poggiofiorito

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk about Poggiofiorito, a lovely Italian town in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, which is part of the Union of the Municipalities of Marrucina.

Physical geography

Located in a strategic position, Poggiofiorito is a small village with a large public park that precedes the town on the road coming from Orsogna, Ortona or Arielli. Additionally, the industrial and craft area between Arielli and Orsogna, and the S.S. 538 Marrucina which connects Ortona to Guardiagrele, give an economic advantage to the town.

Poggiofiorito: history, monuments and nature.

History

Poggiofiorito has an ancient and fascinating history. In Roman times, the center was a passage station from Guardiagrele to the port of Ortona. In the sixteenth century, the current village was founded by feudal lords of Baron Crognale di Arielli and developed considerably in the mid-sixteenth century, with the construction of the church of San Matteo.

During the Second World War, the town suffered serious damage due to the bombings by the Allies to liberate themselves from the German occupation, who arrived in 1943 to pursue Vittorio Emanuele III in Crecchio and then Ortona. However, in the 60s, the town was rebuilt and developed at the industrial level with the creation of the industrial area of Arielli.

Monuments and places of interest

If you are in the area and want to visit Poggiofiorito, you can't miss the parish church of San Matteo. Built in the eighteenth century and completed in the early twentieth century in pseudo-classical architecture, it was restored in the early 2000s after a long and slow process of decay. The church was heavily bombed in 1943, but was rebuilt following the original style. It has a rectangular basilica plan, with a semicircular apse, with a dome near the presbytery, slightly projecting transept arms. The lateral bell tower is a square tower with a pyramid-shaped pinnacle, and four round arches, with protection net and four lights in the form of a Latin cross that light up at night. A set of three bells are inside, and a civic clock is mounted below. The facade is sober and has a portal with a triangular pediment. Access from Corso Vittorio Emanuele is preceded by a monumental double ramp staircase.

If you visit Poggiofiorito, you won't be disappointed. The town is small but full of charm and history. The nature surrounding the town and the industrial and craft area create a perfect combination that makes Poggiofiorito unique. Come and discover it!
