Poggio San Vicino
Poggio San Vicino: a hidden gem in the Marche region
If you want to discover a small medieval village that will offer you moments of peace and beauty, then Poggio San Vicino is the place for you!
Geography
Located on the top of a hill at the foot of Mount San Vicino, Poggio San Vicino offers magnificent views and numerous trekking paths and outdoor activities. In particular, I highly recommend the San Romualdo Ginocchielli Trail and the Water Mills Valley Trail as two naturalistic options that you shouldn't miss!
History
The village's original name was Ficano, probably a Roman settlement called Podium Tufficanum. Later, it became an important outpost to protect Apiro from enemy raids. In 1927, the name was changed to Poggio San Vicino. The village was then aggregated to the municipality of Apiro but obtained its autonomy in 1949.
Monuments and places of interest
The village can boast some beautiful churches, including the Church of S. Maria Assunta, built in the 1800s, and the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista e Battista, which has the coat of arms of the Basilica of S. Giovanni in Laterano on the portal.
Society
The village has a population of 235 inhabitants.
Administration
The municipal administration of Poggio San Vicino takes care of keeping the city clean and tidy.
