History

Poggio San Marcello has a long and fascinating history that dates back to around 500 BC. The tomb of a Piceni warrior and other archaeological finds found in the local area confirm human presence in this area since the early centuries before Christ. In the 13th century, there was a settlement of monks under the feudal jurisdiction of the Bishop of Jesi. During that period, the church of San Marcello al Poggio was erected, still visible and with a Romanesque-Benedictine style.

The Castle of Poggio San Marcello was subjected to the powerful city of Jesi over time and under it, it experienced its maximum splendor in the 1600-1700s. During this period, numerous important buildings were built within the walls, such as the Palazzo Comunale designed by Andrea Vici di Roccacontrada.
