Torsa
Torsa: a Friulian town
Hello! Today I'm going to talk to you about Torsa, a hamlet of the municipality of Pocenia, in the province of Udine in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Physical geography
Torsa is located in the Friulian plain, in the southwestern area of the region. It is the second largest hamlet of the municipality in terms of population and surface area. The hamlet is located in the extreme northwest of the municipal territory and is 4.73 km away from the capital. Torsa is bathed by the Torsa river, which originates in the northern area of the town and runs for 6 km before flowing into the Stella. It is crossed by Provincial Roads 43 and 87.
History
Torsa was founded together with Pocenia thanks to a settlement of local hunters and fishermen who arrived together with some farmers. In 1488, the Torsa mill was invested in favor of Biagio, who belonged to Francesco Ongaro, confirming the authority exercised in this territory by the Count of Gorizia. Subsequently, a part of the area became property of the Savorgnan family, who alternated with the Counts of Sarmete, and the latter provided a significant boost to their own possessions by strengthening agricultural and pastoral activity.
Culture
During the Ferragosto, in Via Dello Sport, at the sports field, the "Rockers Rule" takes place, an event dedicated to the music of the 1950s. The event was born to promote Rock and Roll by offering a stage to bands from all over the world. "Rockers Rule" takes place like a real British Ton-Up day, with the exhibition of cars and motorcycles, live music, and a DJ set. Admission is free.
Sports
In the hamlet of Torsa, the A.S.D. Amatori Calcio Torsa is active, which participates in the LCFC championship, Lega Calcio Friuli Collinare. The team plays in the 1st category of group B and is affiliated with CSEN. The social colors are white and blue, while the headquarters is in Via Dello Sport.
Monuments and places of interest
The church of Torsa, dedicated to Saint Mary Assumed into Heaven, is a building dating back to the second half of the 17th century. It is located in the center of the hamlet and is built of mixed masonry. The church features a stone bell tower, whose main facade is divided by pilasters and decorated with a statue of an angel and an inscription.
From a landscape and fauna point of view, in the town, there is the Municipal Park of the Stella and Torsa rivers. The park covers an area of about 334 hectares and can be visited, even partially, through pedestrian and cycle paths.
