Titi
A description of Titi and its territories
Hi friends! Today I want to tell you about Titi, a hamlet of the municipality of Placanica in the province of Reggio Calabria. Titi is located about 3.23 km from Placanica and is situated at an altitude of 430 m above sea level. In fact, when we talk about Titi, we refer to several localities such as Comunia, Agliastreto, Titi Tuffarelli, Titi Convent, Costa Pirara, Tigliuso, Mortà, Ceresara and Molinaro that extend from Agliastreto to the cemetery through a municipal road that connects Placanica and Stignano.
In this area there are many rivers, including the Torrente Fiorello which flows into the fiumara Precariti. Furthermore, Titi is part of the Tommaso Campanella cultural park.
A visit to the Mother Church
In Titi, there are also places of historic and cultural interest, such as the Mother Church of the village, dedicated to the patron Mary Most Holy of Consolation. Inside the church, it is possible to admire some pieces of the old church dating back to the 1400s. In 2005, the church was renovated in a modern style, but originally it was in a baroque style. In 1784, with the establishment of the Sacred Fund and the requisition of all ecclesiastical assets, an inventory of the Church and the Convent was made by the Captain of the department Francesco Consignani in the presence of the guardian father Fra Michelangelo Sambiasi.
The church has a large main altar in green marble with a Blessed Virgin painted on the wall with a blue silk veil. To the left of the altar is a large iron gate with a chapel. Inside, there is a second altar dedicated to Mary Most Holy of Consolation and, behind it, a small window. In the single nave of the church, there are large marble columns and two altars dedicated to Saint Anthony and the Madonna Assumed into Heaven.
The convent of Santa Maria
Next to the Mother Church is the Convent of Santa Maria, dating back to the 1400s and renovated around 2015. Furthermore, in part of the convent, a recreational center for children has been built. Here Tommaso Campanella took refuge on September 2, 1599 during his escape from Stilo after his fiery sermons in the church.
The square and the playground
In front of the church and the convent, there is a large square, which hosts a playground inaugurated in 2021. The square is a meeting place for residents and tourists who want to enjoy the view of the mountains that surround it.
The Calvary of Titi
Not far from the square, there is the Calvary of Titi, a stone construction with three large iron crosses. The Calvary replaced an old building located near the well and the cows' watering hole. It can be reached by a small stone path that starts from the square and leads to the smooth wall that hosts a carved wooden cross.
In short, Titi is a place rich in history and culture that deserves to be visited. If you ever come around here, do not miss the opportunity to take a walk among its beauties!
