Province of Vibo Valentia: sea, mountains and culture in Calabria

Physical Geography

Territory

The Province of Vibo Valentia extends for over 1139 km², from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the mountains of the Serre. The coastal territory is characterized by terraces at different altitudes with small rural settlements and steep slopes descending towards the sea. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the urban center of Vibo Marina, which has a picturesque port and a retro-port industrial area. Moreover, the provincial territory hosts the Lake of Angitola, a natural reserve that represents an oasis for many species of wild animals.

Climate

The climate of the Province of Vibo Valentia presents different characteristics depending on the area. Along the coasts, the climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters and very hot summers. Temperatures rarely drop below five degrees in winter, although in the valleys of Angitola the temperatures could be slightly lower. The rains are frequent and abundant, especially in the area between Vibo Marina and the mouth of Angitola. Summer is characterized by very hot and sunny temperatures, with occasional thunderstorms in August or September.

From the mountainous areas, the climate situation changes: from sea level to 600 m above sea level, the climate is Mediterranean Tyrrhenian with greater continentality than the coastal strip. Winter is still very rainy, but temperatures can drop below zero. Snow is a rare event, except in higher areas. Summer, instead, is hot and dry.

From 600 m above sea level to 1000 m above sea level, the climate becomes Apennine of the chestnut. Winter is relatively cold, with frequent nighttime frosts. Snow is more common, with at least two or three snow events each year. Summer is hot with temperatures that rarely rise above 30°C.
