Pitigliano is a very picturesque town in Tuscany, also known as "Little Jerusalem" for the historic presence of the Jewish community and their synagogue. The municipality is located in the western part of the Tufo area, bordered by Sorano, Manciano and several municipalities in Lazio.

Territory

The village is located on a tufa cliff surrounded on three sides by ravines, full of caves carved into the rock. The municipal territory extends at altitudes ranging from 300 to 663 metres above sea level, and includes the Lente, Meleta and Prochio streams. The characteristic houses that jut out from the rock can also be observed, which are absolutely hanging.

Climate

The municipality of Pitigliano presents rather low winter minimum temperatures but generally pleasant daily maximum values. In summer, on the other hand, the heat can be very intense, accompanied by low levels of relative humidity. The municipality has a climatic classification with a sum of 2195 degree days, which allows the heating system to be turned on between 15 October and 15 April, for a maximum of 14 hours per day.

History

Pitigliano has a very ancient history, frequented and inhabited since Etruscan times. Numerous settlements were founded here carved into the tufa rock, dating back to the late Bronze Age (12th-11th century B.C.). The village has great historical, artistic and cultural importance, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological sites present in the area.
