Popiglio

Welcome to Popiglio, a historic village in the Pistoia mountains

We introduce you to Popiglio, an enchanting village in the province of Pistoia, located along the Lima River and surrounded by the mountains of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. With its elevation of 523 meters above sea level and its proximity to the State Road 12 of Abetone and Brenner, Popiglio is a perfect place to enjoy the tranquility of the mountain and the fresh air during the summer.

History of Popiglio

Popiglio has an ancient history dating back to Roman times, as evidenced by the "Liber Censum" of Pistoia, which mentions it in 1382 under the name of "Rocca Secumana". The castle, a fiefdom of the Guidi Counts since 1000, was the scene of many conflicts between Lucca and Pistoia. But it was thanks to Pistoia that Popiglio achieved municipal independence around the mid-thirteenth century, although it still relied on the city for military and political reasons. Today, Popiglio is part of the municipality of San Marcello Piteglio, but still maintains its internal magistracies.

Monuments and places of interest in Popiglio

Popiglio is rich in artistic and cultural beauties, such as the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1271 in late Romanesque style and renovated in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Inside the church, there is a marble group of Roman school, "The Last Supper" by Sebastiano Vini, and some wooden panchals and confessionals carved by local carpentry workshops.

The Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art is a must-see for all enthusiasts of sacred art: divided into two sections, it houses sacred vestments and testimonies of popular religiosity. Don't miss the fourteenth-century polyptych.

Another jewel of Popiglio is the Mascagni Theater, built in 1890 and named after the famous composer Pietro Mascagni. After the Second World War, the theater, occupied by the Nazi troops, fell into disuse until it was restored by the municipal administration of Piteglio in the 1980s. Today, the Mascagni Theater is managed in a supra-municipal form and hosts national-level performances.

Popiglio is an enchanted place, perfect for those who love the mountain and nature, but also for those looking for artistic and cultural beauties. The village is suitable to welcome tourists and vacationers throughout the year, but especially in summer, when the cool climate and the beauty of the landscape make the stay unforgettable. We are waiting for you in Popiglio to discover all the wonders of this historic village in the Pistoia mountains.
