The name of the commune, Pisoniano, derives from the Roman gens named Pisone, particularly from Lucio Calpurnio Pisone, consul in 15 BC, who owned a villa here. The name of the place has undergone numerous evolutions over time, including Vicus Pisonis, Piscanum, Castrum Pisciani, Pisonianum, Pisiano, Pisciano, and finally Pisoniano.
In the twelfth century, under the name Piscanum or Pisiano, the municipality belonged to the chapter of the basilica of Sant'Eustachio in Rome, which granted it to the Colonna family, to which it remained, in the Genazzano branch, at least until the fifteenth century.
