History

Fraine has medieval origins dating back at least to 1299, where in the final act of the "designation" of the episcopal properties and rights in Pisogne, 47 "head households" from Fraine and Sonvico were present. At that time, Alberto Paci della Torre di Fraine was also the consul of the city of Pisogne and an iron craftsman. The village was built during the medieval period and extends over a certain area. In 1750, the architect Luca Lucchini from Collina d'Oro expanded the parish church, dedicated to the patron saint of the village, Saint Lawrence. The interior decoration of the church was entrusted to Carlo Innocenzo Carloni, a renowned painter active in the major ecclesiastical factories of Central Europe.

Monuments and Points of Interest

The village has two main attractions: the parish church dedicated to Saint Lawrence and the Madonna delle Longhe, located at the entrance of the Fraine settlement and surrounded by chestnut groves. The parish church dates back to the medieval period, but was expanded in 1750 by Luca Lucchini. After the expansion, the interior was decorated by the well-known painter Carlo Innocenzo Carloni. Outside the village, there is the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Longhe, built in the XVI century and dedicated to the Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist.

Origins of the Name

The name of the village probably derives from the dialectal "frér," which indicates a place with iron mines.
