Foundation
Turin has a two-thousand-year-old history. It was probably founded in the 3rd century BC by the Taurini and then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. In 1563, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy and, from 1720, was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia until 1861, when it also became the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy.
