Demographic evolution

Piozzo has always been a small town, but in recent years it has seen a slight growth in its population, thanks to the presence of young families who have chosen to live here. Economy

Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the main items in the economy of Piozzo and the surrounding region. Here, wheat, corn, vines and orchards are grown, but the specialty of the town is pumpkins. Thanks to the October event, the Regional Pumpkin Fair, Piozzo has become famous throughout Italy for its production and the variety of its pumpkins, which are exhibited and sold during the festival.

Flood of 1994

Unfortunately, Piozzo was hit by a terrible flood in 1994, which caused numerous casualties and extensive damage to the territory. The bridge over the Tanaro river, which crosses the town, collapsed causing the death of seven people. In that dramatic context, the courageous act of the mayor of the time, Felice Boffa, who managed to save the life of a trapped resident in a flooded house, should be remembered.

Retaliation of July 5, 1944

Piozzo also has a past marked by the tragedy of the Second World War. On July 5, 1944, the town was looted and burned by Nazi-Fascist troops, causing enormous damage to the properties and lives of the inhabitants. On that occasion, the partisan commander Piero Bellino was shot, taken prisoner by the Germans.
