Piovene Rocchette

Welcome to Piovene Rocchette!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Piovene Rocchette, an Italian municipality of 8172 inhabitants located in the province of Vicenza, in the Veneto region.

Physical geography

The town is located in Alto Vicentino, at the foot of Monte Summano. Although it is considered a flat municipality, more than half of its territory is located in the mountains. The slope that descends from Monte Summano is covered with pastures and woods, while the north side is more rugged and hilly, with wooded areas extending between Rocchette and Meda.

The plain, which extends on the right bank of the river, is of alluvial and glacial nature and has large rounded boulders, as evidenced during the construction of the highway. Monte Summano, which has conical shapes and limestone bricks, develops through numerous valleys, especially north of Piovene.

The climate is mild and favors the growth of various Mediterranean plants, including olive trees. During the summer, the town becomes hot and humid, while in winter temperatures vary from 8 to -3 degrees.

Piovene Rocchette: history, nature, and culture in Veneto.

Origins of the name

"Piovene" is the original name of the town and is associated with the presence of abundant water in the territory. Another hypothesis derives it from the word "juvenum," referring to the god Jupiter or young Roman soldiers. "Rocchette" was added to the name following the decree of 1933, due to the importance of the area, thanks to the factories, railway station, and breweries present in the area.

History

Ancient times

Prehistoric artifacts have been found in Castel Manduca, such as objects for daily life and remains of dwellings. Later, the territory was occupied by the Romans, as evidenced by the numerous coins of the 2nd and 1st centuries BC found in the Garziere and Castel Manduca areas.
