Origins of the name

The name of the place derives from a literary legend according to which Charlemagne camped here with his army during the descent towards Rome in 800, to be crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. However, there are no historical documents confirming this event. In reality, the name may have been chosen by the owner of a German hotel in 1909, drawing on the legend of Charlemagne. The place was formerly called Moschera.
