A brief history of Pineto
The name Mutignano has undergone several transformations over the centuries. According to the most accredited theory, the name would derive from the Roman personal name "Mutius," which later became "Mut(t)inius." The hamlet "Mutignani" belonged to Berardo, abbot of the abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, in the twelfth century. In 1275, Giordano, abbot of San Giovanni in Venere, asked to swear allegiance to his shares of possession of "Mitignano." In 1462, Ferdinando I of Naples restored to Giulio Antonio I Acquaviva d'Aragona his father's possessions, including the town of "Mitignani." In 1502, Luigi XII of France confirmed to Andrea Matteo III Acquaviva the hamlet "Mutignani." In 1659, "Villa Mutignani" consisted of a castle of about a thousand inhabitants. In 1729, the coastal territory of Villa Filiani, now known as Pineto, was inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the findings of bricks dating back to Roman times. The Cerrano creek was a valid landing until the Middle Ages and was known as the Ancient port of Atri. Here stands the Cerrano Tower today.
