Origin of the name

The name Pignataro is already attested from 1308 and means "he who makes or repairs pots (kitchen containers)". The name is probably linked to the presence of kilns for the production of pots. Instead, the name "Interamna" was added to the name of the town on December 20, 1862 to commemorate the Roman city of Interamna Lirenas.

History

The millennia-old history of Pignataro Interamna has roots in the Roman era. In fact, to keep the Samnites under control, Roman and Latin settlers established themselves in an area already populated by nuclei probably Volsci. Thus, in the 4th century BC the Latin colony of Interamna Lirenas was founded. During the imperial period, Interamna declined and was finally destroyed during the barbarian invasions.

The new town of Pignataro probably arose after the destruction of Interamna Lirenas, thanks to a new settlement erected by part of the local population. Due to conflicts between the Papacy and the Empire, the population abandoned the castle of Pignataro which was destroyed. Many decades later, the castle was inhabited again.

During the war between Spaniards and French fought on the Garigliano, the rank of Pignataro became that of a simple hamlet entrusted to the administration of Cassino. In the seventeenth century, the population grew but the village was still a row of low houses. During World War II, Pignataro was razed to the ground by bombings, but the Pignataresi resisted the German occupation with a group of partisans. After the war, many still emigrated.

Present-Day Pignataro Interamna

Today, Pignataro Interamna presents itself as a collection of scattered hamlets, with some ancient farmhouses. The historic center has been partially rebuilt and stands on a hill surrounded by the remains of the enclosing wall. The Parish Church of the Holy Savior has been rebuilt and is characterized by twin bell towers and frescoes.

The territory of Pignataro is rich in natural beauties, such as the Melfa river, the Ausente stream and Mount Cairo, offering breathtaking scenery and inviting walks and bike rides. Pignataro is also home to a nature reserve, where numerous protected species of animals and plants are present.

In addition, Pignataro Interamna stands out for its cuisine, boasting delicious and genuine dishes, such as "cicerchiata" (typical sweet of Carnival) and "pizza rustica" (a focaccia stuffed with vegetables and cheese).
