Surrounded by nature: the geography of Pievebovigliana
Pievebovigliana has a population of about 845 inhabitants and is located within the territory of Valfornace. The area is known mainly for agriculture and livestock breeding, thanks to the fertile arable land and pastures located on the surrounding mountains. The peculiarity of Pievebovigliana is the presence of an enclave, the hamlet of San Giusto, nestled between the municipalities of Camerino, Caldarola, Cessapalombo and Fiastra.
An ancient and tormented history
The village of Pievebovigliana has Roman origins, but was then inhabited by Benedictine monks who founded the abbey of San Giusto. In the 14th century, during the period of the lords of Camerino, the village was destroyed by the Da Varano family due to repeated rebellions. In the 16th century, Pievebovigliana became part of the Papal States and suffered from famines linked to the harsh climatic conditions of the mountain. During the Wars of Independence, the village was harassed by Austrian troops. Lastly, on October 26 and 30, 2016, Pievebovigliana was struck by the earthquake of Central Italy, with consequent damage to the buildings of the historic center.
