Origins of the name

The name of the commune derives from the Latin words "Plebs", which means community or church that depends on other rural religious buildings, and "Theicos".

History

The village of Pieve di Teco has an ancient and fascinating history, dating back to the feudal rule of the Marchesato di Clavesana, who founded a castle and a small stronghold here to control the traffic and the goods. In 1233, by the will of the Marquess Antonio di Clavesana, the village of Pieve di Teco was born, which was provided with a new castle and a new church, the present-day Oratory of San Giovanni Battista. In 1370 the Benedictines built the first Complex of Madonna della Ripa, while the current Church of San Giovanni Battista was built around 1460.

Since 1386, Pieve di Teco has been under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Genoa and became the seat of the captaincy. This place was very important for the Genoese Republic, as it was located on the border with Piedmont, in a strategic area for the domination of the Arroscia valley. Over the centuries, the village was invaded many times, particularly during the war between the Genoese and the Duchy of Savoy in 1625, but the Pievesi always rebuilt the village with great determination.
