Pieve Emanuele
Welcome to Pieve Emanuele
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Pieve Emanuele, a commune of approximately 15,000 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Milan. Its Milanese dialect makes it even more welcoming and authentic. I invite you to discover the history and geography of this place together with me.
Physical Geography
Pieve Emanuele is located 12 km from the center of Milan, but despite this, it manages to maintain a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The area is defined as the "Bassa Pianura Lombarda" and is surrounded by the splendor of the South Milan Agricultural Park. It is a beautiful place to visit, with an altitude ranging from 70 to 100 meters and a plain that extends endlessly. A territory rich in water, once marshy and now cultivated, thanks to the construction of drainage and irrigation canals starting from the 13th century.
History
Pieve Emanuele has an ancient and fascinating history dating back to the 2nd century BC, with the presence of Gallic-Celtic populations. In the Middle Ages, the commune was called Pieve di Leucate and included the current Locate di Triulzi. The story of its evolution, the reclamation of the land influenced by the arrival of the Cistercians and the emancipation from the power of the Visconti, make it a special place. A curiosity: are you aware of the history of the name "Pieve"? It indicates the place where people gathered for religious functions and was linked to the population that gathered around the church. Wonderful, isn't it?
Curiosity
But our discovery of Pieve Emanuele doesn't end here! There is a particular curiosity regarding the church of Pieve. It is said that the friar Giovanni da Capistrano, a famous preacher of the 15th century, while crossing the city of Pieve, met a young woman who was holding a child in her arms. Just at that moment, a strong wind arose that knocked down a tree, but miraculously did not touch the mother and the child. Giovanni da Capistrano, amazed by the scene, decided to donate to the church an icon of the Madonna with the child that the young mother was holding. The icon is now preserved inside the church of Santa Maria Maggiore.
Conclusion
Pieve Emanuele is a commune rich in history and charm, characterized by the presence of numerous waters and the beauty of the South Milan Agricultural Park. Its ancient church of Santa Maria Maggiore testifies to the passage of great personalities such as San Carlo Borromeo and friar Giovanni da Capistrano. Visiting Pieve Emanuele also means discovering its traditions, customs, and natural beauties.
