Pieve di Cadore

Welcome to Pieve di Cadore: a brief introduction

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Pieve di Cadore, a municipality of about 3600 inhabitants located in the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region. The town is about 40 kilometers northeast of Belluno and is the historic capital of Cadore. Here is also located the Magnificent Community of Cadore.

Let's explore the territory

The municipality of Pieve di Cadore extends between the right and left bank of the Piave River in the Centro Cadore. The territory is predominantly mountainous and extends to the slopes of Mount Antelao, to the northwest, and the border between the province of Belluno and that of Pordenone, to the southeast. There are many interesting peaks and slopes to explore.

From a climate point of view, Pieve has a temperate climate, with not too hot summers and cold winters. If you visit in the summer, you will be accompanied by milder temperatures that will make you appreciate even more the natural beauty of the territory.

Pieve di Cadore: Mountains, history and art

History and archaeological finds

Like all ancient towns, Pieve di Cadore also has a long and interesting history to discover. In fact, since ancient times, the territory of Pieve has played an important role for Cadore, especially in controlling the intersection between the Piave Valley and that of the Boite river.

Over the years, numerous archaeological finds have been discovered that document the Roman presence in these areas. Among the most interesting are the statue of Diana the huntress, various Roman coins, a bronze Patera with a dedication to Mars in Latin, two spoons, and a shovel. These objects, dating back to the period between the end of the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, were found on one of the slopes of Mount Ricco.

Also on Mount Ricco, in 1889, a broken bronze object with Venetian inscriptions was discovered. Other finds were found near the city hall, where the remains of a Roman building dated to the 2nd century were unearthed.

Many other finds have also been found in the historic center, such as an altar with a Latin inscription, a veneticum-inscribed bone fragment, and a fragment of a terracotta vase. In addition, near the current Gran Caffè Tiziano, several stratifications have been discovered that testify to the presence of ancient human settlements.

Pieve di Cadore and Tiziano Vecellio

Finally, Pieve di Cadore is famous for being the birthplace of the painter Tiziano Vecellio, one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. Tiziano was born here around 1490 and was one of the main representatives of Venetian painting in the sixteenth century.

If you are passionate about art, I suggest visiting the Civic Museum, which houses important works by Tiziano, and the Diocesan Museum, where you can admire the triptych of St. John the Baptist, painted by Tiziano himself.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Pieve di Cadore is definitely worth visiting. The beauty of its mountains, the long history, and the artistic treasures it holds will make your visit unforgettable. I hope this brief summary has intrigued you and made you want to discover Pieve di Cadore in person!
