Pietraroja

Pietraroja: a mountain location surrounded by woods and springs

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk about Pietraroja, a delightful Italian municipality with 508 inhabitants located in the province of Benevento, in Campania. Pietraroja is located on the slopes of the eastern part of the Matese chain, included in the southern Apennines. Its average altitude reaches 818 meters above sea level and represents the second highest village in the province. The beauty of this place is enriched by the presence of woods, springs and mountains.

Territory and hydrography

Pietraroja is a mountain location that is located on the border with Molise, but it is surrounded by woods rich in springs. Here are the sources of the Titerno, whose waters join soon with those of the Acqua Calda stream and descend into the plain of Cusano Mutri, passing through a spectacular canyon delimited by the limestone formation of Civita. From mount Moschiaturo, the other main stream, the Torbido, originates and crosses the Medole and Potete districts to the east and south of Pietraroja and flows into the Civitella Licinio plain, where it joins the Titerno.

Climate

The climate of Pietraroja is perfect for people who love freshness and nature. In summer, the climate is cool and rarely humid. However, in winter, temperatures can drop significantly, especially in the presence of the bora, the northern wind that blows particularly in this mountain location.

Origins of the name

The name of the village probably derives from the Latin ''petra robia'', or "red rock", from the Spanish equivalent ''piedra roja'' or French ''pierre rouge''. Pietraroja was also called ''Pietraroscia'' in the past due to the presence of some limestone of this color located on the eastern side of Mount Mutria.

History

Pietraroja was born as a center of the Pentri Samnites who placed their capital in Bojano. However, the current settlement does not coincide with the Samnite village, as the village is currently in its fourth construction. The Sannio earthquake of 1688 destroyed the original settlement which was subsequently rebuilt.

Conclusions

In short, Pietraroja is an enchanting location with a fresh climate and lush nature that represents an ideal destination for those who want to escape from the city and immerse themselves in the beauty of the southern Apennines. The presence of springs, woods, and mountains makes it one of the most fascinating places in the province of Benevento. I recommend you to visit it during your next vacation in Campania!
