The History of the Province of Enna

The regional province of Enna, also known as "pruvincia di Enna" in Sicilian, was once one of the provinces of Italy's Sicily. Established in 1927, the province covered an area of 2,574.7 km2 and included 20 municipalities located in the center of Sicily. It bordered the provinces of Messina to the north, Palermo and Caltanissetta to the west, Catania to the east, and Caltanissetta and Catania to the south. The province was created by separating part of the abolished districts of Nicosia and Piazza Armerina from the provinces of Catania and Caltanissetta. The name of the capital was changed from Castrogiovanni to Enna in December of the same year.

The Abolition of the Province and the Birth of the Free Municipal Consortium of Enna

In 2015, the regional province of Enna was abolished and replaced by the free municipal consortium of Enna, as specified in the 2014 regional law. The abolition of the province was a result of the law passed by the Sicilian Regional Assembly on March 12, 2014. The free municipal consortium of Enna inherited all the functions previously exercised by the province.
