Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Pietrapertosa, a beautiful municipality located in Basilicata, Italy. With its 924 inhabitants, Pietrapertosa is the highest municipality in the region, at an average altitude of 1088 meters above sea level.

A village set in the rock

The village is entirely built on bare rock, almost embedded in it. Near the village, there is the ancient castle dating back to the time of ancient Roman domination, dominated by an impressive natural arch.

Among the natural beauties in the area, you can admire the works of meteoric water channeling, carved into the living rock, and the steps excavated into the boulder that lead to the top of the natural arch.

City history

The city has a long history dating back to the 8th century BC with the foundation by the Pelasgians, who built their dwellings in the lower part of the village. Subsequently, the city was occupied by Greeks, Romans and Goths, and then by the Lombards, until the Byzantine domination. It was under Saracen rule that Pietrapertosa saw the construction of its most characteristic parts. In the Angevin era, Pietrapertosa became an important strategic center of Lucania and participated in the Ghibelline revolt against the Pope in 1268. With the arrival of the Aragonese, Pietrapertosa became the possession of the Gozzuti, Grappini and Diazcarlon, counts of Alife.
