History
The history of Pietramelara is very ancient: it is presumed that there was already a pre-Roman form of life here. The medieval village, with its Lombard tower, was erected to control the territory. Pietramelara was part of the possessions of the Montecassino abbey, and then became a fiefdom, in the hands of different noble families. In 1496, Pietramelara was besieged and destroyed by the Aragonese, but the survivors rebuilt the village. In the seventeenth century, the city was governed by the Giovene family, and then by the Di Palma family, until the end of the feudal system.
Architectural, Archaeological, and Monumental Sites
Pietramelara is known for its archaeological sites, such as the Seiano Caves. The coat of arms and the flag of the municipality of Pietramelara were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on December 13, 1978. The flag is a cloth divided into white and blue. In the past, the Municipality used a coat of arms recognized by decree of the head of government on April 8, 1936, which was blazoned: ''Silver, on a mount of three peaks in green, the median supporting a beehive flanked by three bees, arranged 1 and 2; on the Capo del Littorio''.
