Pietradefusi: history, nature, and culture in Irpinia, Campania.

The origin of the name

Probably founded around the 12th century, the town of Pietradefusi owes its name to the "stone" with which the first houses were built, erected by people from various areas who "melted" into the universitas of "Pietra de' Fusi". Other sources claim that the origin of Pietradefusi is connected to the construction of a fortified stone structure built on a limestone rock outcrop, on which the Aragonese Tower was later established, which characterizes the medieval nucleus.

The history of Pietradefusi

The first human settlement present in Pietradefusi dates back to a group of Oscans or Samnites, who cultivated the fertile hills overlooking the valley of the Irpinian Calore river. In the 14th century, during the Angevin denomination, the town sided with the revolt of the barons and was razed to the ground. In the 16th century, again during the war against Naples, a French army stayed in the town, looting and burning many of the farms where they were hosted. Shortly thereafter, a pestilence broke out, delivering the final blow to the small village. Despite adversity, the community of Pietradefusi has always distinguished itself for its attitude of rebellion against oppressive central power.
