Although its municipal territory falls under the jurisdiction of the Gran Sasso mountain community, Pietracamela is the only town in the Teramo province that is completely within the area of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is predominantly composed of centuries-old beech forests that create a stunning landscape and a captivating atmosphere.
Pietracamela is a characterful town built from local stone, with a compact architectural layout consisting of high-rise buildings made of pebbles and stones bound together. The historic center of the village, with its labyrinth of narrow streets, stepped alleys, and balconies, is a feast for the eyes, and the view of the Rio Arno valley from the town is breathtaking. A section of the great Gran Sasso Equestrian Trail passes through here, an ecotourism route that runs through the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
The Corno Grande di Pietracamela Nature Reserve
In 1991, the Corno Grande di Pietracamela Nature Reserve was established, an area destined for the reintroduction and repopulation of the Abruzzo chamois. The reserve covers a mountainous area of 2,000 hectares and includes Corno Grande, Calderone Glacier, Rio Arno Valley, Mavone Valley, Campo Pericoli, Pizzo d'Intermesoli, and Giuncheria Forest. The natural habitat of these mountains is the perfect environment for the Abruzzo chamois, an endemic species that reproduces and lives peacefully here after being reintroduced in the repopulation campaign of 1992.
The climate
