Unveil the History

Historically, the current territory of the province was part of the Province of Nice until 1860, when most of the province was ceded to France with the Treaty of Turin. The remaining part in Italy became the province of Porto Maurizio, which in 1923 was renamed the province of Imperia after the merger of the capital, Porto Maurizio, with the new city of Imperia. In May 1945, part of the territory was occupied by French troops, but the order of US President Harry Truman forced Charles De Gaulle to retreat beyond Ventimiglia.
