A bit of AZ Picerno's history

Hello everyone!

Today I want to talk to you about an Italian football team that represents my hometown, Picerno. It's AZ Picerno, founded way back in 1973 as Polisportiva Picerno. The team has gone through different leagues, from the third to the second Lucanian category, until reaching Promotion in the 1984-1985 season by winning the playoff against Murese. The team then remained in this category for eight seasons before being relegated to the First Category.

In 1996, the merger between Polisportiva Picerno and Az '81, a society until then operating in the youth sector, took place and the Polisportiva AZ Picerno was born. After several years, the team won the First Category and re-entered Promotion. The following year it was promoted to Eccellenza Basilicata and participated in this championship for a decade!

The rise of AZ Picerno

In 2013-2014, AZ Picerno won the Coppa Italia Dilettanti Basilicata by beating Real Tolve on penalties and in the following season, they won the Eccellenza Basilicata championship, thus obtaining their first promotion to Serie D. However, the 2015-2016 season ended with relegation to Eccellenza, but the Lucans were reinstated to complete the roster.

AZ Picerno spent two years in the left side of the rankings before winning the G-H-I group of Serie D in the 2018-2019 season, obtaining promotion to Serie C for the first time in the club's history. Unfortunately, due to a fix related to the Serie D match in May 2019 against Taranto, the Picerno club was sentenced to last place and relegated. However, the club played in Serie D, finishing second in the group.

The story of AZ Picerno: from the lower leagues to Serie C.

Return to Serie C

However, on July 27, 2021, AZ Picerno was readmitted to Serie C in place of Teramo, who withdrew from the league. During the season, the team obtained its first point against Reggina, in the first round, in the match that ended 1-1. The team finished the regular season in sixteenth place but secured its Serie C status by winning the play-out match against Catania.

The relegation two seasons prior was hard to accept for the club's fans, but with promotion to Serie C, AZ Picerno came back strongly and once again demonstrated the strength of local football. The team also made the playoffs for the first time in its history, finishing tenth in the 2021-2022 season.

Conclusions

AZ Picerno is a small football reality that represents my hometown and I'm very happy to talk about its history. The team has gone through many difficulties, but thanks to the commitment and determination of its members, as well as the support of local fans, it has achieved great success.

I'm very proud of my hometown and the football team that represents it and this brief summary of AZ Picerno's history has allowed me to realize just how difficult their trials have been and how much effort they have put in to win their battles.

We are ready for the next season, go AZ Picerno!
