Piantedo

Welcome to Piantedo!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Piantedo, a small Italian municipality located in the province of Sondrio, in Lombardy. With its 1,418 inhabitants, Piantedo is the first town you come across when entering Valtellina from Lecco.

Piantedo: history, culture and economy of a Lombard municipality.

Physical geography

Territory

Piantedo is a small municipality covering 647 hectares. Despite its size, Piantedo is an essential strategic point, located at the crossroads between Valtellina, Valchiavenna, and Lake Como. Its borders are delimited by the Adda River and Delebio, together with the Orobie Mountains, which make the surrounding landscape truly fascinating.

History

Symbols

But let's move on to Piantedo's symbols. The municipality's coat of arms and flag were granted by a decree of the President of the Republic on September 4, 1998. The flag is a split banner of white and blue, very elegant.

Monuments and places of interest

Piantedo is a municipality full of charm and tourist attractions. Just outside the town, on the edge of a beautiful chestnut grove, is the church dedicated to the Madonna of Valpozzo. This church is truly unique, with a bell tower standing as tall as 30 meters.

Society

Demographic evolution

Like many other municipalities in Valtellina, Piantedo has experienced a strong emigration to North America and Europe. However, its local community is now growing, also due to the large amount of green space that the town offers.

Economy

Piantedo's economy, like many other towns in Valtellina, was closely tied to livestock farming, especially cows and goats. Piantedo's inhabitants used to practice transhumance, transporting their animals to the Gerola and Spluga Valleys. Today, however, the town is much more dynamic and lively thanks to a strong presence of small businesses and merchants.
