Pianiga, a town in Veneto
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Pianiga, a town that is part of the metropolitan city of Venice, in the region of Veneto. Pianiga has a population of 12,142 and includes the hamlets of Cazzago, Mellaredo and Rivale. In this summary, I will tell you a bit about the history and geography of this place, so you can discover more about this Italian town.
Physical geography
The territory of Pianiga is part of the centuriation of the Padua area and consists of the main town, with 3,000 inhabitants, and three hamlets: Cazzago, with 4,300 inhabitants, Mellaredo with 2,627 inhabitants and Rivale with 1,185 inhabitants.
History
The earliest settlements in present-day Pianiga date back to the Roman era, between the 3rd century BC and the 2nd century BC. The remains of the Roman centuriation are still visible today, and the toponym could derive from the name of a landowner of the time. In the Middle Ages, Pianiga became a possession of ecclesiastical entities, such as the Abbey of Sant'Ilario di Gambarare and the Paduan Monastery of Chiesa di Santo Stefano. It was only from the 16th century that the economy of Pianiga began to evolve, with the improvement of cultivation techniques and the introduction of new productions. These changes attracted the attention of Venetian and Paduan aristocrats, who gradually replaced the ecclesiastical entities in land ownership.
During the Napoleonic era, the municipalities were established in 1806, but the borders of Pianiga varied greatly over the years and were finally settled only by the Austrians, when the province of Pianiga passed from Padua to Venice. In 2015, the town was hit by a violent tornado that caused material damage and some victims.
Symbols
The coat of arms and the banner of the municipality of Pianiga were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 1962. The banner is a banner split in white and blue.
