Pianello del Lario: A Journey Through the History of an Ancient Lombard City

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Pianello del Lario, a municipality in the province of Como in Lombardy. With its 1055 inhabitants, Pianello is a small town that preserves important traces of its history. Join me in discovering the secrets of this ancient town through the sections of my summary.

History

Pianello del Lario has ancient origins, probably dating back to the Roman era as demonstrated by the names of the fractions of Maggiana Saliana and Maggiana. In the Middle Ages, the town was a royal court of the settlement of Musso and belonged to the monastery of the Basilica of San Carpoforo. During this period, Pianello included an abbey palace, a castle with a wall and a moat, and the church of San Martino.

During the Duchy of Milan, in the 16th century, Pianello was part of the parish of Dongo, and then of the Squadra of Rezzonico from 1644 until the mid-17th century. In 1751, the territory of Pianello extended to the hamlets of Camlago, Belmonte, Sagliana and Masnego, Magiana, Scarpagiano, Rovezano, and Coslia.

In the 19th century, the cultivation of the vine and the morus became thriving in Pianello, but the economic situation experienced ups and downs until the mid-20th century. In 1807, the municipality of Pianello absorbed the suppressed municipalities of Cremia and Musso, but the decision was revoked with the Restoration. In 1863, the municipality took on its current name of Pianello del Lario.
