Origins of the name
The name Cogno derives from the Latin "cuneus", meaning triangle of land. When the villages of Piamborno and Cogno were separated from the municipalities of Borno and Ossimo, a debate opened up about what the name of the new municipality should be. Many names were proposed, but in the end, Piancogno was chosen: a combination of Piamborno and Cogno.
History
Piancogno is the youngest municipality in Val Camonica, formed by the communities of Piamborno, formerly part of the municipality of Borno, Cogno, formerly part of Ossimo, and Annunciata (Piancogno). In 1168, the inhabitants of Esine wanted to prevent those of Piamborno from throwing palisades across the Oglio river for water intakes.
