Pittolo: the historical district of Piacenza

History

The history of Pittolo is interesting and fascinating. The inhabited center was founded in 418 AD and was mentioned in that era as the "village of Plettoli". In 808, Charlemagne granted Bishop Giuliano of Piacenza the organization of three markets in the city, including one in the village of "Plettoli" on the occasion of the feast of Saint Lawrence. In 872, Emperor Louis II the Younger renewed the concession to the Bishop of Piacenza of rights to three markets held in the city of Piacenza annually, including the one of Saint Lawrence in Pittolo.

In 881, a first church was built inside the inhabited center, which became part of the properties of the canons of the Basilica of Sant'Antonino in Piacenza in 1056. In 1218, Franca da Vitalta founded a monastery in Pittolo, called Santa Maria del Terzo Passo, the third founded by the religious. The monastery of Pittolo became an important point of reference for the area, led by Franca's favorite, Carenzia Visconti, after her death.

Starting from 1806, with the establishment of the French Mairie, and after, with a decree by Napoleon Bonaparte, in 1812 the city of Piacenza was limited to the circumvallation around the walls, Pittolo became part of the municipality of Sant'Antonio a Trebbia. With the suppression of the municipality of Sant'Antonio a Trebbia, which occurred in 1923, Pittolo became a hamlet of Piacenza.

Monuments and places of interest

One of the most important places in Pittolo is the Church of Sant'Antonino Martire, built starting from 1664. The neoclassical gabled façade is characterized by two orders of four Tuscan pilasters which, in turn, support broken cornices in jutting. Inside the church, there are four side chapels whose decorations date back to the period between the end of the seventeenth century and the early eighteenth century.

Society

How nice to know that the inhabited center is home to a parish of the Diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio. This makes it a point of reference for the religious community in the area.

Infrastructure and transport

If you want to visit Pittolo, know that the inhabited center is bordered by the SS 45 of Val Trebbia, from which a communal road called via Galileo Galilei branches off, allowing access to the hamlet.

Conclusions

Pittolo is a unique and fascinating hamlet. Its history makes it a unique place, while its natural beauty makes it all the more magical. If you are in the area, don't forget to visit Pittolo!
